24 march 2007 Gaby de la O has made a significant contribution to the developing independent scene in Mexico. Not just by showing the determination to lead the metal band Dagger through a number of personnel changes since its formation in 2004; as the initial feminine focus of the group became blurred through the challenges of reconciling personal and professional commitments. But also in developing projects such as Invasion Fanzine with Alejandra Espino which since 2002 has been providing acidic angles on important issues relating to the role of contemporary culture in society. The two other members of Dagger Pablo Petrova (guitar) and Mireya Matus (drums) have both contributed to Invasion from the early days and the kindred spirit that exists within their views has been incorporated into the music. Rock has provided the common ground on which the trio has developed an impressive offering built on classic “metal” references that do not need to be reiterated. The confidence with the band at the moment is clear. A recent performance at Alicia on a “Stoner Rock” night displayed the faultless fretwork, incisive lyrics and solid rhythm that create the alchemy to transmute the separate parts into a molten metal rock of the highest purity. A milestone has just been reached with the final master completed for their debut EP after over 6 months of post production work. Although Gaby refers to the Disc as the culmination of the 4 years hard work that has gone on before the recording period; capturing of all the “tears, smiles, laughs, liquor and defiant cigarettes”. As always a network of experience and support has helped Dagger realise their project with production credits given to Jenny Bombo of Las Ultrasonicas and La Lupita, also with graphic design provided by Nino Zombie. It is incredible that as well as being “comandante” of Invasion fanzine and driving Dagger home as a musical proposal, Gaby also finds time to play in a Stoner Rock project Occulta which perhaps provides more freedom for psychedelic jams with Jenny and Daniella Rossell from Alta Traicion. Add on the “daggerlady” blog which looks at Gaby’s experiences from a more personal perspective and you start having some idea of her level of involvement in all aspects of the scene. The combination of all these projects with their multimedia support makes Dagger one of the most convincing and rounded proposals in Mexican music at the moment. At times it is easy to have ones views distorted by misinterpretations of the importance of rock from a feminine angle, it is of course the music that matters and this is all that these bands want to be judged by. Decide for yourself: There is a date for Dagger 25th March 2007 as part of the festival del centro historico 14:00hrs Kiosko de la alameda central - Dagger y Occulta @ Pulque Para 2 en Cholula, Puebla on the 21st April. - Las Ultrasonicas @ Alicia esta noche; tal vez la mejor propuesta de su género en México, a pesar del sexo, la raza, el credo y las preferencias políticas. |
