Great rock at la pirana Yokozuna + Subterranea + Los Actors 2 diciembre 2006
Saturday night at the Pirana captured both the energy and intensity that the current cohort of musicians within the Mexican scene is generating on stag. The line up included 3 bands each with a fascinating story to tell of their experiences during 2006. Yokozuna have had an amazing year coming from selling demos in the London Cafe in Coyoacan to the release of their debut EP through EMI. Sales of the EP have already passed the 1500 mark and are still going strong as the word spreads about their classic blend of rock and blues that harks back its late sixties early seventies heyday. The beautiful thing about Arturo and Tonio is the way they deliver their music live, the songs are banged out with passion that few bands can hope to attain; simply unmissable! Subterranea are the band with the attitude Mexican music needs. Built on the solid platform of their first album “Soledad Brother” 2006 has been the year when Ed, Cobos, Pablito, katcho and Puma have poked there heads above ground. The active dissonance of their early work has been given even more freedom by the addition of the expressive guitar playing of Pablo. The second compendium is in the pipeline and Ed’s contacts in the US are producing positive results in terms of securing the kind of technical support that the complicated construction of the new generation of song will need. On the evening they made a perfect companion to Yokozuna and they are currently planning a tour of Mexican Universities together. After playing a cameo role as Los Diplomats, finally we had as special guests Los Actors; the reincarnation of the original spirit of Fatalist. Menio’s intuitive song writing talents make a welcome return after a spell with Noiselab when the ‘candy coating’ of tracks such as "Arizona" seemed to take an excellent concept off at a tangent from the positive progression that the band had made during the early part of year. With Gonzalo once again on bass and Puma (aka “el mudo”) making his second outing of the evening on drums it was an intriguing debut for the pop-rock combination that produced probably the catchiest domestic song of the year in the form of “makin around”. La Pirana also did its part on the evening by once again keeping prices reasonable for an excellent line up. So what was lacking? Well not only was the venue around half full but, like in so many live events, the audience seemed intent on standing arms folded staring at the stage rather than taking advantage of the obvious invitation to jump around a bit. Hopefully 2007 will be the year when Mexico starts to wake up and embrace the diversity and quality of entertainment that is on offer every weekend in a range of venues across the city. Not only by turning up in the first place but by working up a sweat once inside. http://myspace.com/vivalasubterranea http://myspace.com/yokozunarock
