- yui 13/11/06 When Childs formed in 2001 in Ensenada, Paul Marron and Guillermo Batiz (Memo) had already served as apprentices under the northern electronic pioneer bands such a sonios on the nimbostatic label. These produced the first wave of talent in the Baja California region including Fernando Corona (Murcof) and Ruben Tamayo (Fax). With Tijuanan based Static Discs behind them the production of their first album “Yui” seemed like a natural progression on the numerous self released eps that had established a solid support for their unique charge of electronica that seems to find a beautiful balance between feeling and accuracy. The band spent the latter part of 2004 and early 2005 working on the material that was to be included in the release. The manufacturing of components which are then moulded into soft, soothing soundscapes and decorated with light instrumentation to create an organic entity, is a laborious and time consuming task. The mastering of the album was to be undertaken by Murcof, the long time mentor to Childs, who was now resident in Spain. Many months were lost when the first original recording was damaged in transit. This delay was compounded by the fact that Murcof went on tour before the arrival of the second copy, resulting in the post production running over schedule. Initially Childs was going to have a worldwide release through Darla, the Californian based distributor, without a Mexican edition. One can understand Static’s disillusionment with the domestic market when talents like Fax, Murcof and Carrie have struggled to find outlets. In fact Carrie’s first album, “honey blue star” is only available on import from Dearstereofan of Spain, while Murcof’s sensational if somewhat dark album “remembranza” is imported from The Leaf Label in the UK. Nevertheless Childs has been insistent on a Mexican release in order to salute the country-wide fan base that has supported the duo since the early days. Thus a deal was struck for the digi-fold version to be distributed by Noisekontrol. End of story? Not quite, the process in Mexico has been plagued with difficulties and the band is starting to feel the fatigue. Paul and Memo look on the process as a steep learning curve, but would like to get the disc out so they can concentrate on new material. They talk about it almost as if experiencing the discomfort of a long overdue pregnancy. Childs and Static Discos are thinking globally with this release, which is unusual within the present context of new Mexican music. Although as stated initial distribution will be handled by Darla from the US, the group are also seeking to develop a fan base with the support of a Lejos Discos in Spain who will be releasing an EP of work related to Yui. The idea is to build on this to reach a point where a full release of the album is possible. Japan is also being considered as fertile ground on which to sow the Childs seed. The musical style and the linked in artwork all seem very much in step with the Japanese market and the group will be attending the AIME (AsiaPacific Incentives & Meetings) Expo in Anaheim California in July next year to develop contacts, possibly as part of a West Coast Tour. The promotional bandwagon for the album release is just starting to roll. Videos connected to tracks from the album are conceptually ready but awaiting the accountant’s nod. The release party is planned for December at Pasaguero and the band is confident that they will have Mexican editions of the album available on the night. The “future lullabies” of Childs have survived somewhat of a nightmare journey in order to make them available to the Mexican public. A top ten position on Darla and extremely positive reviews from the international music media suggest that the trip will prove more than worthwhile. If Yui manages to clear a path for the release of all Static artists in Mexico the album may prove to be pivotal in the creation of competitive independent labels as part of a healthy domestic music industry. http://myspace.com/staticdiscos http://myspace.com/lejosdiscos
