Los
Actors shake your mind
Hotel Virreyes –
27/04/07
The last time Menio,
Gonzalo and Ricardo teamed up at the Virreyes was at the start of 2006 when
Fatalist had just hit the exponential in terms of exposure for their first
EP, which included the quite outstanding offering “Makin around”. However
the rest of the year did not fulfil the promise of that evening.
Ricardo found himself in
the uncomfortable position that so many drummers before him had experienced;
that of divided loyalties between his two projects Fatalist and Furland.
The offer of EMI support meant that within a few months contractual
obligations forced Furland to take priority. Fatalist’s fate was, almost
predictably, sealed as the band slowly lost momentum over the course of the
year.
The essence of the early
Fatalist lay in the trust and understanding that existed between the
aforementioned trio. Thus when Menio and Gonzalo looked to start a new
project Ricardo was keen to get involved, planning things around other
commitments.
It is because of this that
Los Actors carry all the best aspects of Fatalist forward; Menio’s gift for
writing tracks that get you moving combined with his strong stage presence,
Gonzalo’s attitude driven bass playing and Ricardo’s powerful percussion -
all the more energetic for being bottled up inside Furland’s milder melodies
for the last six months.
The band seems to have
learned from the experiences of the music business over the last couple of
years and in no rush to take on management or throw themselves into the
complex task of producing a full release. ‘Nice and easy does it’ is the
message that comes across in their relaxed banter.
They have already made a
demo, just to give an idea of what they can do. “Shake my mind” is the
standout track and has all the qualities of a Menio classic. It is a real
blow between the ears as intense, forced lyrics blend with a thrashed guitar
and solid beat; throw in beautiful breaks and catchy chorus and you
potentially have the hit of 2007. The song is still being worked on to make
sure it is ready to be served up as a totally tantalising dish for a media
that at times could be thought of as lacking a healthy appetite for domestic
music.
The other tracks on the
demo all display true rock pop characteristics with use of harmony, beat,
electronic voice distortions and strong choruses. Pop as is potentially
popular rather than sickly sweet. The live performance exhibits enough
guitar smashing attitude to scare off anyone who might think they are in for
a night of harmless candy-coated fun.
The plan is to slowly
build a quality portfolio of songs before even thinking about entering the
recording studio. The importance of playing live is also fully appreciated
and Los Actors will be hitting the road hard for the rest of the year in
order to build grassroots support to a point where the people can decide
rather than the myopic media. Given the performance at the Virreyes it is
almost frightening to think how good they will be by the beginning of 2008,
when they intend to start their push for success in earnest.
