Siconauta @ Spanish Cultural Centre
1 june 2006
Siconauta,
headed by the multitalented Ari Brickman, launched their debut album “Duele” (on
the fonarte label) to a packed house on the patio of the Spanish Cultural
Centre. They play a particular brand of rock that at times almost sounds slowed
down, like a finger placed lightly on vinyl. Blues, downbeat rock lapsing into
jazz (even bossa?) combine to produce reflective, lazy tunes collected on an
impressive first album.
With Yamil Rezc on drums things were given a strangely familiar feel. He
presently seems to be in an incredibly productive mood, post-Morbo, playing with
Sub Division and producing Los Musicos de Jose’s first album through his
“phantom” label Staya Discos. The addition of Alfonso from La Barranca playing
bass for one track gave added bite to the evening’s entertainment and he was
given a tremendous reception by an incredibly mixed audience in terms of age and
style; testament to the appeal of this particular brand of rock.
The only complaint on the night was that it was all over too quickly. With such
a large crowd it may have been a perfect opportunity to introduce a new act to
an unsuspecting audience. Album launches are always a strange affair and the
tendency is to lapse into self-indulgence. On this particular occasion it was
probably justified seeing as the top floor had an evening of electronic for
those feeling like carrying on the party with a slightly higher bpm.
