Rising
in their original form, The Primos, the band made an instant impact with
their dark heavy blend of bass and percussion creating a thick sonic soup
with a surface tension punctuated the unusual instrument of Amira’s stabbing
ultrasonic voice.
Hard Soul
Records in LA took notice and signed the band immediately sending them on a
whirlwind US tour to promote The Primos EP but also suggesting a name change
to Sub Division to make them more palatable to culturally sensitive American
tastes. A return to Mexico City on the dominant Indie Label Noiselab (also
a Mexican home for the best of UK acts such as Mogwai, Dirty Pretty Things
and Bloc Party) the band has continued to build their unique brand of truly
alternative rock. The sound has been distilled into their into the first
long play release “Blue Boy” with Phil Vinall helping on the technical
side. The title track has just received a nomination from the prestigious
Quartz Electronic Music Awards based in Paris clearly illustrating their
cross genre appeal.
With a
new material in the pipeline and the band taking control of their own
destiny through the creation of their own record label Mun Records (which
also presenting a selection of the best of Mexico City’s young new talent
such as Payro and LeBaron) 2008 promises to be the most intriguing year yet
for the talented quartet.
Sub
Division are looking towards Europe in general and the UK in particular as a
natural extended audience for their music. With experience supporting the
best acts from across the world no stage would be too big or no opportunity
undeserved at this moment in time.
