Tagged Recordings

“sounds like you want it to”

28/11/06

Tagged Recordings represent one of the many small independent studios located in el DF.

The operation, based in La Condesa, started in January this year but the concept goes back around 5 years to when Mani Rodriguez made the move from Mexicali to the capital to focus on the production side after wrist problems encouraged a move away from drumming. Tagged partner Braugio Beltran, from Chihuahua, joined Mani at Tagged during 2006 after studying sound engineering in New York.

Even though the pair prefers the focus and intensity of the studio and spends 80% of their time there, work at live events provides the majority of their cash for day to day expenses.

Indeed they feel that it is the experience of dealing with the live experience that has taught them the most about sound engineering and challenged many of the rules of that they learned in college.

The live aspect of their work is doing more than developing their skills.  Working with groups such as Subterranea, Meet Your Feebles and El Hombre Bala has provided an opportunity to talk to other bands and develop relationships that may lead to more work in the future.

At present they are working on final mixes in their 24 track studio for Timothy Brownie, Anyway and Souvenir; who represent some of the strongest new talent coming out of the Mexican scene.

Tagged prefer to deal in a range of musical styles with Ska, Hardcore Punk, Indie/Alternative Rock and Drum and Bass all represented in their growing portfolio of work.

A new act called Viaxis are also having their first recording remixed at Tagged with an interesting mix of lounge, house and rock taking advantage of Tagged’s cross-genre experience.

The equipment they use, as they are the first to acknowledge, is not quite of the quality of big name producers/studios. Nevertheless they still feel that they are at the vanguard of technology through using contacts in the US to buy the hardware, given the limited and expensive range that exists in Mexico.  The technical quality that this provides can be maintained, even with a limited budget, by regular updates of software available on-line from equipment providers.

2007 will be about building on the foundations laid during 2006. Tagged Recordings are hoping to broaden their client base by organising and promoting a number of events using the bands they have worked with.  This will be reinforced by the introduction of Tagged Films which will give a new dimension through providing audio assistance for video productions.

There always tends to be compromises  made on the road to being a commercial success but Tagged Recordings are confident that they can maintain the purity of their sound and remain “independently professional”.
