- Mexico’s Electronic Ambassador
29 June 2007
Indie Rocks! Yes well
of course it does, but what about the electronica? Mexico’s electronic
community at this present point in time represents the most
internationally successful segment of Mexico’s tasty musical pie.
With small but
incredibly productive concentrations of artists around the country the
emissions made by labels such as Soundsister Records based in Mexicali
and Abolipop from Guadalajara, as well as capital ventures such as Imeca
Music and Konfort Discos have been making an digital impression
throughout the globe..

Building bridges or barriers?
16
June 2007
The New York Times
published an article last month that gives a partial picture of the
developing scene in Mexico. It is perhaps the most significant step so
far towards raising awareness internationally about the growing
diversity and depth of new music here.
The article is
interesting in many aspects not least in the fact that the proposals
from Noiselab and Nuevo Ricos dominate the piece. It is disappointing
that the author, Josh Kun, does not feel the need to investigate the
connections that exist between the parties presented...more |

Abolipop in the Park
13
June 2007
On a cool English
morning Diego and Israel Martinez were to be found sat on a bench in
Hyde Park close to Park Lane. In such salubrious surroundings the
reality of the cost of spending time in London seemed even more acute.
"The room we have is the size of a shoebox" lamented Diego of Jack’s Son
and Lumenlab.
The brothers are
suffering the extortion of being a stranger in a foreign land on behalf
of Abolipop Records, the Guadalajara based electronic label. The idea
is to spend a couple of months in Europe in order to raise awareness
about the finely crafted digital sounds that have been concentrated on a
special compilation for the trip including acts such as Transistor,
Cubenx and Movus.

The
cosmetics
The
real thing
28 may
2007
The cosmetics are the
one band in Mexico that has made an impressive progression over the last
year. After over ten years playing covers the group ooze the maturity
and confidence both on stage and talking about the business in general
that sets them apart from other less experienced proposals.
Eduardo is a self
confessed anglophile in terms of his music. His parents introduced him
to classic bands from England in the 70s and 80s at a very young age.
His appreciation of British contemporary culture includes the sartorial
elegance of a Chelsea Football Club shirt and the lacing of his lyrics
with insightful expressions like
“we'll be spliffed, but feeling fine
eh?” and “Sniffing charlie with a few quid”.

TV Vintage - Turn On Tune In
15 may
2007
In the context of the
wide range of physical spaces open to musicians in Mexico City VC15
represents one of the more comfortable venues for live music.
Unfortunately as with the Los Fancy Free gig a couple of weeks before a
disappointing turn out perhaps dragged the night on even later than
planned as audience and organisers tried to wait each other out.
The unpredictability
of start times, with a tendency towards tardiness, must be a
contributory factor in poor attendance. A flyer that advertises a
9pm start should be accurate to within half an hour. Expecting
people to hang around while bands hang around waiting for more people is
somewhat of a vicious cycle. But it will be a brave band and a
long, lonely period of transition before this trait can be reversed.

Vive Latino 2007

The last time Menio, Gonzalo
and Ricardo teamed up at the Virreyes was at the start of 2006 when Fatalist had
just hit the exponential in terms of exposure for their first EP, which included
the quite outstanding offering “Makin around”. However the rest of the year did
not fulfil the promise of that evening.
Ricardo found himself in the
uncomfortable position that so many drummers before him had experienced; that of
divided loyalties between his two projects Fatalist and Furland. The offer of
EMI support meant that within a few months contractual obligations forced
Furland to take priority. Fatalist’s fate was, almost predictably, sealed as the
band slowly lost momentum over the course of the year. ...more |

Humachine de Subterránea – es la
revolución del rock
27
abril 2007

Subterranea’s Humachine – it’s a rock revolution
27
April 2007
The process of making
an album is expensive, complex and time consuming; the decision to
commit to it is not one to be taken lightly. Thus as Subterranea
receive the master of their third sonic snapshot “Humachine” it an
opportune moment to consider nature of their previous two offerings and
the progression that is represented by this latest release.
“Subterraneas”, a
homebrew of songs recorded in 2002 reflects the energy and enthusiasm of
Sonora youth, raised in the slow baked desert environment. Being so
close to the US border as they developed their tastes, the natural
inclination for everyone was to find their music on the American
alternative scene. This perhaps put them slightly ahead of the curve in
terms of new styles like EMO and Happy Punk that seem to be creating
such a vibe in el DF more recently.

Interacción
Electrónica
20 abril 2007

Electronic interaction
20
april 2007
At times the music
business can seem like a dog eat dog world. In a market where perhaps
only five percent of the population represent the effective demand
(desire backed by ability to pay) for alternative music things can get
cut throat and the focus often resorts to self preservation. In this
atmosphere the benefit of a community spirit, shared values and the
desire for change can be lost.
The possibility of
using interaction as an engine of growth is best exemplified by the
electronic element of the Mexican scene. This is something that is
encouraged by the nature of the medium in which artists work.
Technology orientated and internet based, the spread of electronic music
has been relatively rapid. Already many Mexican artists from labels
such as Konfort and Imeca Music have enjoyed success in places like
Japan and Europe; but most interestingly things are developing in terms
of the western hemisphere as well.

La muerte del disco?
13 abril 2007

Traditional music

big music labels are fighting to realign their portfolios by allowing
the sales of MP3 files without security measures through consumer

It would seem digital

in the early 1980s, much to the chagrin of vinyl and tape producers will
now experience the rapid decent into senility. Given the fact that the
writing is on the wall for this form of storage system, why are so many
bands still focused on the first release?

Dagger's coup de grace
24 marzo 2007

24 march 2007
Gaby de la O has made a significant contribution
to the developing independent scene in Mexico. Not just by showing the
determination to lead the metal band Dagger through a number of personnel
changes since its formation in 2004; as the initial feminine focus of the group
became blurred through the challenges of reconciling personal and professional
commitments. But also in developing projects such as Invasion Fanzine
with Alejandra Espino which since 2002 has been providing acidic angles on
important issues relating to the role of contemporary culture in society.
The two other members of Dagger Pablo
Petrova (guitar) and Mireya Matus (drums) have both contributed to Invasion from
the early days and the kindred spirit that exists within their views has been
incorporated into the music. Rock has provided the common ground on which the
trio has developed an impressive offering built on classic “metal” references
that do not need to be reiterated....more |

Collectivo Club
13 marzo 2007

13 march 2007
The lack of investment in creating independent
labels in Mexico has meant that there is a vast gap between the number of bands
coming through with potential and the capacity of the existing independents to
handle such talent.
The solution for many of the shortfalls that
exist in terms of support for bands has come in the form of the collective. A
circle of trust with bands sharing resources is a common occurrence in Mexico.
Happy Fi Records from Monterrey is probably the best known example of the
collective in action with bands such as Niña and La Live Band achieving relative
success over the past few years. With a combination of skill sharing in the
production process and collective bargaining giving sufficient strength to
warrant signing a deal with EMI to distribute CDs in large outlets in
